Primary Evidence

"The boss must have his little way until he was ready to talk real business. Brooke knew him for a great man who probably would not be so great were he not particular over small things. He could not stand the sight of a leaky bucket. He was so capable he could see waste at a glance, he thought the other fellow a fool if he could not see waste for himself. He would pick up a discarded length of pencil, sharpen it, and put it away for future use. He could not bear to see a jam-tin thrown away that still had jam in it, yet he never questioned the ration bill on any station. More than that, he always insisted on good food."
